“The Media.” Who are they, anyway? When we listen to the radio or watch the news, who’s deciding how our story is told?
It’s time for a change. We want to give kids in the Bronx the tools they need to become engaged citizens and leaders of the 21st Century, empowering them to broadcast their voice and share their ideas with the rest of the world.
Whether it is learning interview techniques, audio/visual recording, or dissecting how news is packaged and propelled through media channels, funds given through CrowdRise will support DreamYard in being able to provide a variety of platforms and supports for young people in the Bronx to have their voices heard.
Two main areas of focus for our Hive Challenge are:
BronxCast: Podcast Programming: BronxCast is a pilot program beginning this Fall, intended to provide a way for our community to reshape the negative media perspective of the Bronx, which stigmatizes and hampers positive youth development outcomes. Your support will provide professional development and the technology and supplies that enable us to capture the voices and stories of 300 young people in a series of audio podcasts and share those with the community at large.
College Laptops: The DreamYard Art Center is there every step of the way, as kids make their way from kindergarten to 12th grade. After they graduate, we ensure continued support so that they can continue on a pathway to a successful educational and then professional career. Your support to the DY Art Center will help provide 5 laptops to 5 recent HS graduates! Additionally, funds will support student travel for the purpose of idea-exchange, such as the NYCoRE Conference.
