It only took us 13 years: 2-3 days a week in nice weather, my husband and I walk through our Cleveland neighborhood of Tremont. Often, after seeing a stray plastic bottle or empty beer can I'd think "I should bring a bag and pick up trash when we walk" and then finally this summer (2014) we did. Now we collect at least a large outdoor trash bag every 2 days without going more than a mile from our house. And, after reading stories about how the trash eventually ends up in the sewers (which in 200 yr old towns like Cleveland all have overflow issues) and go right into the lakes & rivers, I am now obsessed with helping keep the earth healthier by doing our tiny part. My goal is to raise $500 to provide enough supplies to get a group of neighbors to help us (will buy Grip & Grabs - no one wants to touch trash- trash bags and neon vests that say "Volunteer Tremont Trash Patroler" so we don't get hit by cars as we clean up freeway exits (worst spot for litter). It could be so impactful to see a mound of trash bags filled with plastic and other non biodegradable items going to proper landfills instead of into the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie. Who wants to help us make a dent in this problem?
